Ajuy-Iloilo-Philippines

On the northern part of the province of Iloilo lies the municipality of Ajuy, a second class municipality, 93 kilometers away from Iloilo City. It’s location bounded in the South by Ajuy Bay, in the North by the Municipality of Sara and in the West by the municipality of Barotac Viejo. The municipality started from a small settlement established by the early Malays seeking for freedom. It was originally called “Asui” by the early natives. According to a folklore, during the Spanish Era, there was a spanish man walking in the forest he didn’t know what is the name of the place then he saw a man in the forest and ask the native looking for pieces of wood and asked What place is this? Native said “gapangahoy”.And they believed the word “Ajuy” was derived from the word “kahoy”. People of Ajuy commonly called themselves as “Ajuynons”.

The municipality of Ajuy, mostly comprises of Agricultural land. Ajuynons way of living is farming and planting some varieties of agricultural crops they trade and export it from other places. In the other hand, Ajuy has also a coastal area where fish is abundant and fishing was also their source of daily living. It shows how industrious and hardworking the people of Ajuy.

What is a Tambobo? Tambobo is a hiligaynon term used by the natives for a storehouse, warehouse or storage structure for agricultural products. Rice is their main product and also fish.

In honor of their Saint Nicholas de Tolentino  Tambobo festival is celebrated every September 6 to 10 it is starts with a thanksgiving mass then activities and events on the following days. It’s highlight was the Tambobo Festival Dance Drama Competition were there different participating schools are joining to express their interpretation of how the Ajuynons lived during the spanish era and what way of living they have depicting on their own culture, customs and traditions. Giving care in the environment and the factors how pests and animals affect their way of living. Another highlight is the “Lin-ay sang Tambobo” a talent search which the grandeur and beauty of an Ajuynon  was parade on the crowd signifies the essence of good to the people and be ambassadress of goodwill for the people of Ajuy.
